Important Information
In 1997 a compulsory standard BS EN 1836:1997 was imposed on all sunglasses to be sold in Europe. These sunglasses will have a CE mark and conform to standards of optical quality, robustness and UV protection. The are 5 filter categories under the standard:
These categories relate to the density of tint relating to visual comfort and not the level of UV protection. Most sunglasses fall into either categories 2 or 3.

Categories 3 & 4 are recommended for Mountains & Surface Water Sports Activities but category 4 is considered unsuitable for driving.
